It's very simple to get kids to understand how smart conservation is. The assignment is to figure out the gas mileage of your parents' car without telling them why. Then two weeks later Pump 'Em Up! (the tires that is) according to the car manufacturers guidelines and check the gas mileage again. It's a great math assignment and a super science experiment that will really help save the environment. And your parents will be happy that you saved them some money because not only will they get better gas mileage, their tires will last longer too.
